Artist Statement:
I was brought to the States when I was two years old in 1994. I grew up speaking Spanish at home and English at school. I was my parents' translator, but I wasn’t that good.
I am proud to be a first-generation Mexican immigrant.
In Spanish, we have a saying, “ni de aqui ni de alla, " meaning “neither here nor there.” In the United States, you are not considered total American because you are from another country; in Mexico, you are not considered complete because you have an accent.
You’re caught in the middle, not from here but not from there. That's what I wanted to translate into my artwork. It symbolizes the beauty of our roots, trying to fit in a box but constantly feeling a little off.
